Q. I am a health care Practioner from another country; can I successfully gain employment opportunities in Australia?
A. This will depend on your country of origin. We have reciprocal arrangements with a few countries, but as a general rule, you need to re-register in Australia in order to be employed as a Dentist, Dental Hygienist or Oral Health Therapist. This process comprises of a 3 step process – 1. An initial assessment of your documents; 2. Written Examination and 3. Practical Examination. The ADA hold the Written Examinations component of the process twice yearly in March and September and the Practical Examination component is held also twice yearly in June and November. Candidates must ensure that they have successfully completed the Written Examination prior to sitting the Practical Examination. The process usually takes approximately 2 years from start to finish for Dentists, and approximately 6-12 months if you are a RDH or OHT professionals. It is possible however, to finish this process in a shorter period of time depending on how quickly you can sit for the exams. Dental Connect Recruitment successfully employ many oversees professionals while they are completing their registration process and they have gained some local experience. More information can be sought by visiting the APRHA website http://www.ahpra.gov.au/ Dental Assistants are not required to be registered to work in Australia, provided you have successfully undertaken your training in English, you should find work easily in the Australian Dental setting.
